Atmosphere: uncertainty of meaning

Thinking about interaction design and cinema, in particular, there is the important component which is crucial in creating an immersive experience — atmosphere. From Greek ἀτμός (atmos) translates as ‘vapour’, and σφαῖρα (sphaira) means ‘sphere’. Originally, this term refers to a layer of gases surrounding a planet or other material body, that is held in place by the gravity of that body. But it also found its place in architecture and spatial design to define the sensorial qualities that space emits. German philosopher Gernot Böhme has also expanded on the architectural atmosphere, in his essay “Atmosphere as the… More

Interactive storytelling

The question I want to make clear is what the difference between interactive storytelling, interactive movie, interactive drama, interactive fiction, interactive narrative, interactive narration and art game. So I will try to figure it out in this article. It is not a comprehensive investigation, just a forming of a clear general understanding. Let’s start with definitions (from Wikipedia): Interactive storytelling (also known as interactive drama) is a form of digital entertainment in which the storyline is not predetermined. The term interactive video usually refers to a technique used to blend interaction and linear film or video. Interactive… More

Interactive video: Her Story

For my final major project, I decided to explore the intersection of storytelling, cinematography and interactive design. Interactive movies have a long story since the first was released in 1967 (Kinoautomat by Radúz Činčera) and with today’s technological possibilities it is getting even further and becoming more accessible, thus more widespread. That is why the Sam Barlow’s game Her Story is of particular interest to me.  This game is a great example of an unusual non-linear narrative. Right from the very beginning, it immerses you in its own atmosphere. There is no direct instructions, just the interface of an old-school PC desktop… More

Just a storytelling… a regular one

What could be better than a good story? It seems to me that our civilization is built on the stories. Stories or narratives have been shared in every culture as a means of entertainment, education, cultural preservation and instilling moral values. The most effective way to communicate the information between humans is to tell a story. The only thing that changes over time is the variety of mediums through which the story is recorded and narrated. From the storytelling around a campfire to complex interactive narratives which employ different means of media nowadays we have passed a long way. That means… More

FMP & Thesis Proposal: Training

Title TBC Field of Study Wellbeing, modern urban lifestyle, influence of everyday technologies on human’s brain activity and mental health. **Included:** Ways to prevent anxiety and improve mental wellbeing. **Excluded:** Mental disorders and ways to cure them. We have to talk about her…

In attempt to create a mystery interaction device, I am going to build a wellbeing bot with a tangible interface. As you could know from the previous posts, I decided to take ELIZA as the core engine for my program. But I have to change the scripts and to get some inspiration I have watched the movie “Her” (2013), a romantic science-fiction drama film, that follows Theodore Twombly (Joaquin Phoenix), a man who develops a relationship with Samantha (Scarlett Johansson), an intelligent computer operating system personified through a female voice. The film shows us… More

Research/_02 — Literature Review

As a part of academic work you should read a lot of literature, but if you do not document it, it does not exists. That is why writing literature reviews is essential. So this week we were assigned to give it a first try. You can see below what I have come up with. Review: Ruth Ronen is a full Professor at the department of philosophy at Tel Aviv University. Her areas of interest include Philosophy and Psychoanalytic Thought, Philosophy of Art and Contemporary Aesthetics. I was particularly interested in one of her articles, which called «Art and Anxiety, or:… More

Research/_01 — Reverse Engineering

Final major project proposal is what concludes this term for us, but it hard to understand what to do if you have never done it before. So to kickstart our progress, we were assigned to take existing artwork and try to reverse engineer it creating a project proposal for it. My choice is the installation of one of my favourite artists Olafur Eliasson, which called “The Weather Project” and was presented to the audience in 2003 at the Tate Modern. Project Proposal Title The Weather Project, 2003 Field of Study Wind, rain, sun – as one of the few fundamental… More

Real life magic: psychosomatic medicine

Searching for something “mysterious” (something which hard to explain, but it works) in our life I remembered about psychosomatic medicine. Almost everytime I am experiencing any problems with my body and health, either physical or mental, I am able to find an answer how to get back to the balance in the psychosomatics. “Psychosomatic medicine is an interdisciplinary medical field exploring the relationships among social, psychological, and behavioural factors on bodily processes and quality of life in humans and animals.” — Wikipedia It is so hard to convince someone that the… More
